Shropshire Council

Offa's Dyke Projects Officer

Band 11, £32,910 per annum

37 hours per week, 3-year fixed term contract

Shropshire Council is seeking an enthusiastic and appropriately experienced Project Officer to deliver a programme of conservation works and public engagement for Offa’s Dyke, which will be jointly funded by Cadw, Historic England and the Offa’s Dyke Association.

The post will be hosted, and line managed by Shropshire Council, but the Officer will work along the entire length of Offa’s Dyke. Project outputs will be agreed with the Offa’s Dyke Conservation Management Plan (CMP) Implementation Board (including representatives from Historic England, Cadw, the Offa’s Dyke Association and the Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail Officer) at the start of the project and reviewed at regular intervals.

As a natural communicator, you will work with partners, land owners, volunteers and any other interested parties, including the natural environment bodies, to facilitate improved management and understanding of the Dyke through the delivery of practical conservation works alongside enhanced public engagement and wider public benefits. You will have a specialism in an aspect of land management, ideally with experience of undertaking earthwork repairs in the historic environment in landscapes that are both farmed and visited recreationally, and experience of working in areas of nature conservation interest.

Based within Shropshire Council’s Natural & Historic Environment Team, you will have excellent opportunities to work collaboratively within a friendly, multi-disciplinary team of historic environment professionals, both within the Council and its funding partners. You will work in a mobile and agile way to deliver the aims of the project programme, using the Offa’s Dyke Centre in Knighton as a base as necessary.

You will have excellent communication skills and IT skills, demonstrable experience of managing budgets and delivering conservations schemes; engaging with farmers, land-owners and volunteers; and a sound understanding of the issues relating to the management of the rural historic environment. This is a three-year fixed term post.
