Biodiversity and Conservation Manager

This is a new role reporting to the Head of Sustainability and based at Windsor. This role will lead an ambitious conservation and habitat enhancement project across The Crown Estate’s Windsor and Rural portfolio and will work closely with senior management teams to ensure the highest level of conservation practices are achieved across the portfolio.

A significant proportion of the Windsor Estate is designated by Natural England as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA). Windsor has one of the largest collections of veteran and ancient Oak and Beech trees in Northern Europe.

This role will work help us achieve a successful balance between managing our environmental responsibilities whilst providing an attractive, safe and well maintained destination for over five million visitors a year.

In addition the successful candidate will also lead, advise and implement an ambitious plan to improve the biodiversity and natural habitats across The Crown Estate’s Rural Portfolio covering 180,000 acres and a diverse myriad of landscape types.

Working collaboratively with the management team, you will develop and deliver practical “on the ground” conservation management to deliver our objectives and aspirations. Responsibilities include: building and maintaining excellent relationships with key stakeholders including Natural England and other conservation bodies, NGO’s and statutory consultees; developing metrics and KPIs to set clear targets, track activity and report outcomes; managing survey data; undertaking ecological surveys to inform work programmes and managing projects to deliver practical habitat improvement.

Meticulous attention to detail is essential as are good organisational and project management skills and the ability to balance a significant number of priorities and projects. An excellent communicator with an adaptable, collaborative style you will have a proven track record of conservation and habitat improvement and enhancement with significant experience in the conservation field with demonstrable experience of delivering landscape scale conservation projects. An understanding of ecosystems services and also natural capital measurement and accounting is essential as is associations with relevant industry organisations.
