East Sussex County Council

South East Coast Path National Trail Officer

Ref: orbisTP/44837/30379

Full salary range: £39,701 - £41,213

Location: Lewes

Do you want to manage the South-East’s newest 250-mile long National Trail? If so, there is now a unique opportunity to be the National Trail Officer for the South-East section of the England Coast Path.

The role, which covers the Coast Path from Bexley to Brighton, is based in the Rights of Way & Countryside Team at East Sussex County Council. As the National Trail Officer, you’ll be managing a new 250-mile long-distance walking route, running along the coast of the South-East.

You will be leading on managing public access and coordinating maintenance along the Trail. Working with stakeholders, your role will also involve the funding, promotion, and enhancement of the Coast Path. This will require independent travel around the South-East to remote locations in all weathers. You will also be dealing with a wide range of people, often resolving competing interests.

Further support for the role is also provided nationally by a wider ‘family’ of National Trail Officers.

As this role works across the South-East, we would be open to discussing flexibility in working location and also considering the role as a job share.

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Have experience of working in countryside access or related areas
  • Have the ability to innovate and develop a new asset and area of work
  • Can develop and maintain excellent working relationships with partner organisations and stakeholder
  • Are able to administer a complex, often competing workload
  • Can write formal reports to a high standard.

If you are interested in this role, please submit your CV and a covering letter, which set out how you meet the essential requirements in the job description/person specification, and any other information which you feel makes you a suitable candidate for the role.

Interviews will take place in-person at County Hall, Lewes, East Sussex on 19th April 2023. If you are unavailable on this date, or wish to have the interview over Microsoft Teams, let us know and we may be able to accommodate this.

Managing the South-East England Coast Path creates a real opportunity to develop and improve a nationally important walking Trail running through some of the most iconic countryside in Britain. If you think you’re the right person for this role, we would welcome your application.
