Phillips Ecology is a small independent ecological consultancy based in Hampshire. We provide reliable ecological support for planning applications across Southern England and work for a range of clients including architects, local planning authorities, Hampshire County Council, homeowners, long-term biodiversity monitoring projects and developers.

We are excited to be seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated ecologist to join our friendly team in Hampshire. We are a flexible employer, open to both full-time and part-time candidates and are committed to supporting employees to find a working environment that works for them. We combine home-working with the anchor of an office space – a place for our team to interact socially and gain valuable in-house training.

With the support of our principal and assistant ecologists, you will work across a range of ecology projects, develop your skills and knowledge and support our expanding business.

The ideal candidate will have relevant work experience gained in an ecological consultancy environment or similar.

The role

You will carry out a range of field surveys, including extended Phase 1 habitat surveys and protected species surveys including phase 2 bat, dormouse, reptile and badger surveys, alongside day-to-day desk-based work such as client liaison, managing surveyor teams and report writing.

You will work on Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Ecological Impact Assessments, designing and implementing ecological mitigation with the support of more senior team members, compensation and enhancement schemes, and drafting applications for Natural England EPSM licences.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Genuine and demonstrable enthusiasm for ecology
  • Qualifying CIEEM membership, or be working towards this
  • Degree in a relevant subject, for example Wildlife and Conservation Management, Conservation Biology and Ecology, Ecology and Environmental Biology.
  • At least two year’s ecological consultancy experience
  • Experience in undertaking extended phase 1 ecological assessments/ PEAs
  • Hold at least one Natural England / Natural Resources Wales protected species class licence
  • Experience of assisting with or producing high quality reports
  • Proven experience of species surveys, including bat surveys (roost and activity) and reptile surveys
  • Knowledge of relevant UK and European legislation, policy and guidance
  • Be a team player with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Sound MS Outlook, Word and Excel skills
  • A full driving licence
  • Legal entitlement to work in the UK

   
Desirable Skills

  • Working towards holding additional Natural England / Natural Resources Wales class licences (bat, great crested newt or hazel dormouse)
  • Experience in using DEFRA Metric 3.1
  • Botanical survey skills
  • Named ecologist on an EPSM licence application
  • GIS Skills
