Project Assistant

Salary: £16,380 per annum (£9,828 per annum pro-rata)

The Community Forest and Woodland Outreach Project is part of the Children and Nature Programme funded by the Department of Education and managed by Natural England, the government’s advisor on the natural environment. The Children and Nature Programme is a key commitment within the Governments 25 Year Environment Plan. The aim of the fund being to help more children and young people from communities experiencing disadvantage to benefit from nature.

‘Outside is Fun’ is an opportunity to engage school children to come out into the woods to have fun, to learn, to experiment, play and open their minds to the possibilities of the future. The ‘Outside is Fun’ team of staff and local volunteers will aim to partner with every primary school within walking distance of 6 Community Woodlands in South Yorkshire. The team will form collaborations with each school and be able to provide them a tailored programme of outdoor learning sessions that is appropriate and suitable for their children and situation.

Activities will depend upon what suits each school. This is possible as TCV has the capacity to offer a wide range of opportunities. These include but are not limited to:

  • School Green Gyms
  • Forest School provision
  • Bushcraft
  • Curriculum Sessions
  • Citizen Science
  • Orienteering
  • John Muir Award
  • Teacher and parent/guardian training.

The mission is to establish a rolling programme that will engage every year 5 or 6 pupil (depending upon the preference of the school) within walking distance of sites across Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster. Achieving this will demand agility to respond to the needs of the children and their teaching staff.
