Summary

As part of the National Trust consultancy team who support the work of properties across the North with expert knowledge in ecology, farming, GIS and water you will provide additional expertise on coast working across a number of our coastal portfolios to bring together an ambition for our coast on a north scale.

 

Working as part of our region-wide Land, Outdoors and Nature team this two year fixed term post is pivotal to support our operational teams on the ground and articulating the bigger picture.

 

PLEASE NOTE: This is a 2 year fixed term contact and can be based from any National Trust property or Regional hub in the North.

 

What it's like to work here

 

The north region of the National Trust reaches from Northumberland to The Lake District and from Cheshire to Yorkshire. Extending to some 72,000Ha of some of the most iconic landscape in Britain, we care for some of the most incredible stretches of coastline and associated species. From the incredible wildlife wows of the Farne Islands to the cliffs and bays of Whitehaven and Morecambe followed by the remarkable sand dunes systems and fabulous beaches of Formby and Sandscale and then East to the towering Jurassic cliffs of North Yorkshire and magnesium limestone rich pastures of the Durham coast.

 

Our teams in the north are working hard to look after fascinating habitats and species and to connect the millions of people who visit them with the amazing natural and cultural heritage our shores and islands can give. Beyond this we are working hard to give people the spiritual uplift and physical refreshment that time on the coast can provide.

 

What you'll be doing

 

The remit of the role will be to develop a strategic overview for coast in the north region, pulling together existing work and identifying new opportunities to raise the profile of our coastal asset. Developing a coastal strategy in line with our national strategy and LON ambition will be a key achievement that will help support property teams into the future.

 

One of the existing pieces of work you will be supporting is the conclusion of roll out of England Coast Path in the region and identifying opportunities to develop for LON and visitors as Coastal Connections legacy.

 

As Coastal Officer, you’ll be the central figure in the North who co-ordinates the knowledge and expertise across the region and part of your role will be to establish a clear, purposeful, resilient and focused coastal thematic group to support this work.

 

Communication will be key, and you’ll help create a voice for coast in the north by joining the east and west of the region with cohesive messaging and internal communications and raise the north coast profile at central and regional levels.

 

You’ll build relationships with key central NT colleagues, map existing coastal partnerships and support teams to develop new and fruitful partnerships along the coast, take a lead on building key connections with external coastal technical groups to make sure the organisation is well informed on everything ‘coast’, and spot opportunities to link up beyond our boundaries.

 

Also, using your expertise, you will sense check coastal training needs across the region, working with national specialists to identify interventions and support as appropriate to build confidence in teams around coastal issues and working with partners along the coast.

 

Who we're looking for

 

This is a real challenge and will require a highly motivated individual who can work effectively and with real impact on a north of England scale.

  • You will need knowledge of the coast and coastal change issues along with a good understanding of the National Trust and its conservation principles / strategic direction
  • You will need to be innovative and engaging with a real passion and skill for engaging people in the love of coast and connecting with key stakeholders
  • You’ll need excellent organisational, planning, and communication skills to work closely with our existing teams and harness their deep knowledge, expertise and passion for the coast to help you produce a clear and well- reasoned coastal strategic ambition for the region
