Cannock Chase Council are introducing a new Apprenticeship Scheme which will offer the successful candidate the opportunity to complete a Level 2 Diploma in work based Environmental Conservation within the Councils Countryside Service.


The Countryside Team manages over 250 hectares of land within the District of Cannock Chase for the purposes of wildlife conservation and informal public recreation including a Site of Special Scientific Interest, three Local Nature Reserves, Local Wildlife Sites, and an Ancient Monument. Habitats include woodland, heathland, wetland, and species rich grassland. The sites are grazed by our own herd of Dexter cattle. The sites are predominantly urban or urban fringe in nature.


The primary role of the team is to ensure that these sites are maintained to a high standard both for wildlife conservation purposes and public enjoyment.


You should have an enthusiasm for wildlife conservation  and  must be keen to learn, have a positive, polite and professional approach  In addition candidates must possess a valid driving licence and may be required for occasional weekend working.


You should also be able to carry out heavy manual work and have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both face to face and by telephone, demonstrating courtesy and tact, in dealing with the general public. In addition you should have basic numaracy and literacy skills to entry level 1.


During your Apprenticeship you will learn and develop a good practical knowledge and gain experience of Countryside management techniques for nature conservation together with working with volunteers and on a wide range of habitat types.


Training will be provided by in-house Managers and Teams and Derby College will work with and support you to complete the relevant Level 2 qualification. A wide range of relevant NPTC courses will also be provided to ensure the successful candidate has everything they need to commence a career in Countryside Management.
