Volunteer Ranger - Black Down Estate 


Full time Volunteer opportunity with the National Trust on the Black Down Estate near Haslemere on the Surrey / Sussex border in the South Downs National Park. Rent and bill free accommodation in “Speckled Wood”, our wonderful timber framed eco house comes with the role.


We are looking for motivated people who want to develop their career in countryside management by broadening their practical skills and have a proven track record of leavers going on to a job in the field. With us you would gain experience of working on a range of habitats, from woods to heaths and meadows, as well as working with our in hand herd of cattle and working on a well-established popular events programme. There will be opportunities to work with and lead groups of volunteers and working holidays as well as working on some fascinating sites and with some wonderful wildlife. Our volunteers have their own vegetable garden, chickens and beehives, and get opportunities to develop and hone their skills with support from our dedicated and professional team. Through this and their work on the wide range of tasks across our countryside estate they get a great introduction to working life as a Ranger.


Appropriate training will be given on the job as well as tailored practical skills based formal training and qualifications such as chainsaw certification will be provided.  Out of pocket expenses paid.


We are looking for a minimum commitment of 6 months / 1 year. 


Suitable applicants are invited along for an interview day on the property. This consists of working on a task with the countryside team over the course of a day with a short sit down discussion with some of the team. Free overnight accommodation will be provided the night before if required to make the day more manageable.
