Trail Ranger - The John o’Groats Trail

Contract for Services - £32,400 one-year contract

Annualised Hours averaging a 37hr week including weekend hours

Location: East Coast of Caithness, Scotland

This is an opportunity for a self-motivated individual with a background in trail development and/or as a trail ranger or countryside ranger.  You will be the sole professional working with charity trustees and volunteers to develop a trail in the far north of Scotland and lead walks and volunteer events, and give talks related to the trail.

The Friends of the John o’ Groats Trail (jogt.org.uk) is a small charity developing a very big project: a 147-mile walking route from Inverness to John o’ Groats.  Come help us make the trail an international

destination, and allow trail walkers from as far away as Land’s End to complete a journey to the Far North along the clifftops of Scotland.

Duties will include:

  • Plan and lead walks along the trail and provide interpretation for walk attendees
  • Give talks to local groups about the trail
  • Plan, organise, and supervise volunteer days which develop and maintain the trail
  • Perform trail warden duties: walk the trail, identifying issues, and taking a pro-active role in resolving them
  • Work with landowners to establish and maintain good relations and resolve issues
  • Help the trustees in planning the further development of the trail, and assist in such development by exploring possible sources of funding and completing grant applications

The applicant contractor must have their own vehicle, computer, and phone to be used on trail business.  Vehicle miles to be reimbursed.
