Summary

 

We池e looking for someone with significant experience within a farming environment to join our team. Working as part of a large community of consultants, you値l be supporting our property teams, providing expert advice and guidance, as well as promoting good practice and innovation in the field.

 

As our Farming Adviser, you値l be share knowledge and expertise in key areas of farming such as soil management, farming systems, farm produce and energy crops, food marketing and farm diversification, with the ambition to decide on land use with other disciplines, and achieve higher standards of land management across the National Trust as set out in the Land, Outdoors and Nature Programme of our Strategy.

 

You値l also be leading, encouraging and promoting environmental responsible farming by collaborating with other professionals and managers within the Trust as well as partners from other organisations and developing positive relationships with tenants and farmers

You値l have the opportunity to work on a fantastic range of estates across Cornwall, from the splendour and magnificence of historic estates like Lanhydrock, Cotehele Penrose and Trelissick, to the miles of rugged and scenic beauty that is the Cornish Coast, the largest coastal ownership in the National Trust incorporating iconic locations such as the Lizard, Pentire and recently acquired Trevose.

 

What you'll be doing

 

As our Farming Adviser, you値l be responsible for providing expert and professional guidance to support properties within Cornwall for all things related to farming. Part of the support you値l provide will be to help our property teams become more self-reliant, so you値l be coaching and training our teams to enhance their understanding and skills in the subject area and as part of this, you値l be contributing to our Conservation Performance Indicator (CPI) Workshops. You値l also be involved in supporting and ensuring that our property teams are compliant with National Trust and external regulations relating to all areas of farming.

 

You値l specifically be focussing on key areas such as soil management, high nature status farming and sustainable land management your knowledge and expertise will help to shape our business plans across the region, and your guidance will be vital in the development and delivery of our Estate Management Plans. You値l also be working collaboratively with colleagues from other departments with specialisms in different focuses to ensure that the plans you work on are beneficial for all, and will not have a detrimental effect on other areas. You値l work collaboratively with teams at property and with other consultants to ensure these plans are practical and realistic whilst also meeting our broader aims as outlined in our Land, Outdoors and Nature objectives to ensure environmentally responsible farming.

 

You値l assist in the co-ordination of in-hand farm support payments, Agri-environment and cross-compliance obligations and provide practical advice to in-hand staff and site monitors. Additionally you値l also be responsible for identifying and securing external funding for our farming programmes. You値l also be contributing to, and drawing upon, internal and external data to champion innovation in farming, as well as the work the Trust does for farming as a whole. You値l build professional relationships externally, sharing expertise through partnership working, and ultimately help to raise the Trust痴 farming profile with new and existing audiences.

 

Who we're looking for

 

To excel in this role, you値l need to have/be;

  • A farm environment professional with substantial post qualification practical experience in land management, soil management, farming systems and farm business, or be able to demonstrate the equivalent knowledge
  • Strong demonstrable consulting skills
  • Experience of working with a variety of farmers with a range of experience in farm management systems and farm diversification initiatives
  • Substantial knowledge of agriculture and the farm environment with a comprehensive understanding of external issues, legislation, policy, instructions and guidance
  • Great influencing and negotiating skills
  • Good Project Management skills
  • A confident communicator, with the ability to deliver clear, succinct advice via written reports and presentations
  • The ability to work collaboratively with others
