At the Canal & River Trust, we believe life is better by water. Set up in 2012 to care for historic waterways across England and Wales, we aim to bring wellbeing benefits to millions by transforming our canals and rivers into spaces where local people can spend time and feel better.

These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the nationís strategic and local green infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. And your role will be to help us implement the Environmental Management System that protects and improves them.

About the role

Joining our West Midlands Environment Team, youíll work closely alongside a wide range of functions here, including environment, operational, asset management, engineering, estates, planning and third party works. From monitoring and reporting on compliance and regulatory requirements, to identifying implications of legislation on our activity and providing practical advice on ways to look after our interests, youíll help us to enhance our waterways. Waste management, contaminated land and water quality, as well as dredging programmes and environmental surveys, will all be part of the remit you support us with.

Although your reporting base is in Birmingham, you will be required to travel regularly to offices, depots and sites throughout the West Midlands.

About you

Weíre looking for someone with a working knowledge of current environmental legislation, especially within the UK and Europe, experience in environmental protection and the ability to resolve complex issues. Youíll also need excellent communication skills, relevant professional institute membership (CIWEM or IEMA, for example) and a valid driving licence.

About us

We look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of canals and rivers. Our waterways contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways are on the doorstep of 8 million people and reach some of the most deprived communities within the UK. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the wellbeing of our nation.  Come and be part of it.

In addition to your annual salary and car cash allowance, we offer a competitive contributory DC Pension scheme arrangement, and numerous other employee benefits.
