About the role

Here at the Canal & River Trust, we know life’s better by the water. We also know that conservation, sustainable development and enhancement of the natural environment are key to our success in maintaining the inland waterway work and ensuring our waterways are fit for modern-day use. As an ecologist, working as part of our Environment Team, you will therefore be providing the advice and expertise we need to achieve our strategic vision, now and in the future.

We’ll look to you for technical support on a wide range of ecological issues, and through a variety of multi-disciplinary teams including waterway operations, project managers, contract managers, volunteer coordinators and communications professionals. This will involve supporting the commissioning of works, monitoring compliance with regulatory requirements, recording environmental incidents, undertaking preliminary studies and investigations, and promoting the work of the Trust at a local and national level, among many other things. The role is based in Birmingham, but you will need to travel regularly across the West Midlands to support various teams across the region.

About you

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with post graduate experience and proven expertise in ecology who wants to develop even further in the field. You must have full membership of a relevant institution (such as CIEEM) as well as a degree or equivalent in an appropriate discipline. You’ll also need experience of delivering ecological advice and support, a comprehensive understanding of current environmental legislation, and a proven ability to present technical information to non-technical audiences..

About us

We look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of canals and rivers. Our waterways contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways are on the doorstep of 8 million people and reach some of the most deprived communities within the UK. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the wellbeing of our nation.  Come and be part of it.

In addition to your annual salary and car cash allowance, we offer a competitive contributory DC Pension scheme arrangement, and numerous other employee benefits.
