The postholder will work as part of the Peatland Action team in Scottish Natural Heritage covering work in the North and South Highland SNH Area. This area is shared with another project officer and the emphasis of this post will be in the North Highland part of the area. The project officer will also be expected if operational needs require to work outwith this area. They will lead on the completion, development and implementation of peatland restoration projects in partnership with land managers and other stakeholder groups, eg Scottish Water, Deer Management Groups, NGOs, and communities.


The post holder will work with colleagues, partners, contractors and land managers to identify projects which improve the peatland resource, lock up carbon and improve associated habitats (blanket bog, wet heath and dry heath). They will engage and assist land managers to seek their involvement in the programme and will ensure that practical solutions are costed and specified on a site by site basis, using specialist contractors where required. Applications for funding for practical works will be made to SNH (Peatland Action) and SRDP Agri-Environment Climate Scheme (if available and appropriate), as well as exploring other funding options such as the Peatland Code. Where funding applications are successful, contracts for implementation of capital works will be drawn up and project managed to ensure completion to an agreed high standard.
