River Stewardship Company are seeking temporary field surveyors to assist in extensive surveys of invasive species along the rivers of north and east Yorkshire.


As part of the Environment Agency’s invasive plant programme, we are surveying 1300km of rivers across north and east Yorkshire in May, June and July 2019, recording the distribution and abundance of invasive species along the riparian corridor, with a priority focus on Japanese knotweed, giant hogweed, and floating pennywort. 


Surveys are to be conducted main river on the catchments of the Wharfe, Ure, Nidd, Swale, Hull, and Ouse.



  • Fit and healthy, able to walk significant distances (15km or more) during the day
  • Able to work in a small team
  • Good knowledge of natural history/ecology
  • A UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
  • Experience of professional or voluntary ecological survey
  • Experience of data collection and recording



  • A degree in Ecology/Environmental Science or similar
  • Experience of working near water
  • Knowledge of invasive plants


Surveyors must be able to provide: binoculars, hand-held GPS (Etrex 10 or similar), personal first aid kit, smart phone with spreadsheet app.


Rates of pay are £10.50/hr on a self-employed basis. Mileage expenses covered at 45p/mile.


We would particularly welcome paired applications, and/or proposals for whole river survey.
