Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG) Countryside Ranger

Full-time (40 hours per week), fixed term appointment including lone, evening and weekend work

Employment: 15th May 2019 to 31st March 2020 (possible extension of contract beyond 31 March 2020, subject to successful Service Agreement tender process)

Deadwater Valley Trust (DVT) is seeking a self-motivated ranger to help deliver the SANG Management Plan and also support the Community Ranger in a program of events and activities in Bordon Inclosure SANG. Working as part of the existing DVT ranger team this exciting role is part of the wider regeneration of Whitehill & Bordon with its amazing wildlife & habitats, with over 60% of the parish being designated to either European (SPA/SAC) or UK (SSSI/LNR/SINC) level.

 

The role will include:

  • General countryside management & maintenance of trees, habitats, paths, fencing and litter picking
  • Regular checks of SANG infrastructure and ‘natural’ play area which involves lone working at times
  • Supporting the Community Ranger in planning and running a program of activities and events
  • Organising & supervising volunteers, community groups and contractors in practical conservation management tasks
  • To ensure all work complies with Health and Safety legislation and current good practice
  • Overseeing and monitoring recreational use of the SANG
  • To liaise and communicate with the Senior Countryside Ranger on a regular basis
  • Preparing regular reports to DVT Trustees and Whitehill Town Council as the land owners
  • Working and liaising with DVT Trustees & Rangers and partners to promote the long term value and responsible uses of the SANG

 

The role will be delivered mainly within Bordon Inclosure SANG but also the adjoining Deadwater Valley Local Nature Reserve as part of the wider DVT ranger team.

 

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Experience in countryside management with relevant tertiary qualifications
  • Experience of working with volunteers, community groups, contractors and local councils
  • Experience in a community engagement role and engaging a range of audiences
  • Experience of producing reports using a range of media and IT skills including social media
  • An enthusiastic, flexible, self-directed and motivated outdoor person who is an effective communicator and also works well in both a lone and team environment
