Logo: The MacRobert TrustSalaried Horticultural Training Placements

Applications are now open for four, salaried horticultural training placements to start in mid-September. Applications are invited from recent entrants to horticulture, and are strongly encouraged from current or recently qualified horticultural college students for a valuable one-year, hands-on practical training and work experience to progress and fast-track their career. The MacRobert Trust Horticultural Training Scheme has operated for over 20 years and sits within the Trustís extensive charitable agenda. There are four first year trainees and two second year.  On completion of the year, many of our trainees have progressed on to much sought after training placements with the Heritage and Botanic Gardens Bursary Scheme, the Professional Gardeners Guild, and RHS Wisley. Many others have progressed directly into employment in full-time gardening positions, many within prestigious gardens across Britain.

All applicants must demonstrate a keen interest in developing a professional horticultural career. The placements are fully hands-on and practical and successful candidates will assist in the maintenance and development of our extensive ornamental and productive gardens in Royal Deeside. Trainees will work closely with our highly experienced gardens team whilst undergoing tuition and regular assessments. The placements are salaried and run for a full calendar year.

In addition, in-house training and assessment towards the achievement of the RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture is undertaken by trainees throughout the year. The MacRobert Trust Flagship Garden at Douneside is the principal training garden and is an accredited RHS 'Qualifications Approved Centre' (Grade 1 status) and also a RHS 'Partner Garden'.

Training is also given in Pesticide Application PA1/PA6 and Chainsaw Operation CS30 and trainees are given financial assistance to undergo formal assessment towards achieving these certificates.

All training positions are salaried (circa £15,000) and full-time for one year, with a second year available for two selected trainees. Shared accommodation is available within a six-bedroomed (each with en-suite) estate cottage. Further details, application form and testimonials can be seen by visiting our website and clicking on Horticultural Training Scheme.

Completed applications must be received no later than 5th May and forwarded to: Stephen McCallum CHort MCIHort, Head of Gardens. The MacRobert Trust. email stephen@themacroberttrust.org.uk
