Job Title: Head Ranger Estate Management

Location: Kelburn Castle and Country Centre, Fairlie, near Largs, North Ayrshire

Full-time for a five day week 9am-6pm



Kelburn Estate is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic team leader with excellent practical and organisational skills. You will be directly responsible for the ranger team at Kelburn, focusing specifically on the countryside management and maintenance of the estate. This is a diverse role which involves co-planning and executing an organised estate maintenance plan.  


Main duties:

  1. To liaise directly with the Estate, Centre and Office managers in assisting with all aspects of estate management and maintenance.
  2. To ensure all parts of the Kelburn Country Centre are accessible to the public and are responsible for maintaining, as examples, woodland areas, paths, step seats, bridges, signs and signposts, wooden fences, etc.
  3. Assisting with Grant Funding applications and submitting reports when necessary
  4. Supervising seasonal rangers and volunteers, including delivering training where possible.
  5. Supporting daily routine operations, Litter / loos / parking / etc if needed
  6. Support the country centre manager in monitoring safety of facilities adventure play areas etc.
  7. Working with the estate team to carry out essential works where necessary
  8. Assisting with countryside management efforts towards drawing up a forest management plan.
  9. To ensure correct procedures are carried out regarding accidents to staff/clients and appropriate accident forms filled in according to Health & Safety guidelines.
  10. Assisting the gamekeeper on all aspects of shoot management, including training on breeding game birds, planning and organizing shoots, clearing woodland, protecting game and controlling predators and keeping record of what is shot or caught

  6. Qualification in Countryside Management / Recreation or equivalent or substantial experience in a relevant subject


Desired Experience:

  1. Relevant and practical experience in countryside management including access & recreation management.
  2. Demonstrable experience of managing and coordinating staff and volunteers.
  3. Relevant NPT Certificates; particularly chainsaw are desirable.
  4. Previous experience dealing with Scottish Natural Heritage funding schemes and reporting a plus.
  5. Other Requirements:
  6. Current Driving License
  7. Subject to occupational health approval, is able to meet the physical demands of the post.
  8. A commitment to and enthusiasm for developing ranger services at Kelburn.
  9. Willingness to work regular evenings, weekends, and public holidays if required.
