Countryside Ranger (Occombe Farm)

Full Time, Permanent – Five days per week (includes weekend working) - £18,000 (+ pension)

The Torbay Coast & Countryside Trust cares for over 1,750 acres of land including cherished sites such as Berry Head, Hope’s Nose, Anstey’s Cove and Cockington Country Park.  We are based at Occombe Farm, which incorporates a popular café, vegetable and herb garden, nature trail, small play area and a range of livestock including cattle, sheep, pigs, pygmy goats, alpacas, ducks and chickens. We are looking to recruit an individual with at least two year’s relevant experience to fill the role of Countryside Ranger for Occombe Farm. In this role you will take the lead on managing all the visitor-facing aspects of the site including infrastructure (signs, paths etc.), animal husbandry and growing produce in the garden for use in our on-site café. You will build a strong body of volunteers to help with keeping the site in good order and ensuring that our visitors have a great time. This is an opportunity to contribute to the success of Occombe and the Trust while further developing your own skills and experience.

This is a great opportunity for the right person to play a major part in developing and improving Occombe Farm, one of our highest profile sites. Your role will be to lead the management and running of the visitor-facing elements of Occombe Farm (nature trail, vegetable garden and small-holding) with the aim of ensuring that all our visitors have an enjoyable and informative experience. The work will be diverse, ranging from practical maintenance and construction of infrastructure, to animal husbandry, growing produce, habitat management and engaging with the public. You will be interacting with our visitors informally (i.e. while working on the site) and formally (i.e. talks, walks etc.). You will also be working with the Trust’s Engagement Team to deliver structured activities and with our Marketing Officer to promote the farm as a destination. An important element of your role will be the development, supervision and training of groups of Occombe volunteers to help with the maintenance and running of the site.
