Background Information


Scottish Forestry (SF) is an agency of the Scottish Government. Working with stakeholders to promote the interests of forestry and providing support and guidance around policy and regulations in line with the Scottish Forestry Strategy.

Our National Office is based at Edinburgh, as well as having five Conservancies (South, Central, Perth & Argyll, Grampian and Highland & Islands).

The Conservancies carry out regulatory and grant support functions. Promoting sustainable forestry and balancing the needs of timber production with those of landscape, biodiversity and people. They give advice and information on forestry and provide grant aid to woodland owners to establish new and manage existing woodlands.

We are inviting applications from students for a one year placement for the period of September 2019 to August 2020. The placements will be based in either our South (Dumfries) or Central (Hamilton) Conservancies.


The key responsibilities for the role will include:


Your role will include, but not be limited to:


  • Undertaking site inspections to assess compliance with grant conditions and felling licences;
  • Assisting the Woodland Officers in handling grant applications including new planting, forest plans and felling licences;
  • Supporting the Conservancy development work undertaken through direct and partnership projects, including plant health, education and health, and environmental projects.
