Are you passionate about gardening in public spaces?  Do you like working with people of all ages and abilities on horticultural projects?  Are you interested in how wildlife, plants and people can work together?


We are inviting applications for the role of Horticultural Participation Officer on the Sydney Gardens National Lottery Heritage Funded restoration project. Join us and you'll be part of a small dedicated project team within the Parks Service at B&NES Council.  This three year project is committed to creating a 21st Century Pleasure Garden in one of the few remaining 18th Century Pleasure Gardens in the UK.


You’ll be working practically in Sydney Gardens with volunteers, with local community organisations to increase participation and engagement in gardening and growing, as well as working closely with the project team to develop planting schemes for the park and deliver an integrated programme of development over the restoration project.


Key responsibilities:


  • Lead a volunteer ‘Sydney Gardening Club’;
  • Engage people of diverse ages and abilities in horticultural activities in the park;
  • Assist with improving and protecting wildlife and biodiversity; and
  • Logo: Sydney GardensHelp to develop and implement improved planting for the Gardens, including new areas being opened to the public.


To succeed in the role of Horticultural Participation Officer you’ll have experience of leading volunteers in gardening and horticultural activities, alongside a horticultural qualification or equivalent experience. You’ll be able to demonstrate that you can work as part of a team, as well as lead groups, to deliver practical projects that engage with the public.  You'll be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills with a keen interest and capacity in working with people of all ages and abilities.
