What it's like to work here

 

Based at Fyne Court you will be responsible for looking after the National Trust's properties on the Quantock and Blackdown Hills, both Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You will help us conserve a diverse range of locations from heathland hills and oakwood valleys of the Quantock Common SSSI to the wild garden and parkland of Fyne Court to the iconic Wellington Monument rising from woodland, wild flower rich grassland and a mire on the Blackdown Hills.

 

What you'll be doing

 

As the Area Ranger you will manage a small team of Rangers working like you throughout the portfolio: following the lead from the Propertyís Business Plan you will build and manage an effective and flexible work programme for you and your team. You will support your fellow rangers in undertaking engagement and conservation work, contributing towards Countryside Stewardship objectives.

 

You will play the key role in maintaining excellent standards of presentation and property maintenance, successfully achieving Conservation Performance Indicator targets. You will build and maintain strong professional relationships with colleagues, contractors, tenants and neighbouring land managers.

 

Youíll also be responsible for helping with excellent communication of our conservation work to a wide range of audiences, both new and existing, through events, guided walks and engagement with local communities. You will appreciate the need for our countryside sites to bring in income, so your business ideas will play an important part in the teamís success.

 

Who we're looking for

 

To deliver this role successfully, you will need to; 

  • At least 3 yearsí experience of landscape scale countryside, nature and heritage conservation management
  • Have experience in woodland and grassland
  • Have an understanding of nature habitats and species
  • Have evidence of good people management and leadership
  • Be able to manage contractors and small projects, including budgets.
  • Diploma/NVQ3 or higher in countryside or environmental conservation
  • Have excellent communication & organisational skills including public presentation
  • Have a proven track record of managing and leading on health and safety and environmental compliance
  • Empathy with, and significant experience of, working with volunteers
