Summary

Rangers play an important at the National Trust, and through thinking about the long term help us look after our special places forever, for everyone. You will be leading the Ranger team at an exciting time and will be pivotal in driving forward both great conservation and an outstanding experience for visitors in our outdoor spaces.

What it's like to work here

Home to the Anson family since 1624, the Shugborough Estate is the complete working estate. The estate includes a Georgian mansion house with magnificent views over the riverside garden terraces, Grade 1 listed parkland, walled garden and working farm. The site borders and extends into Cannock Chase SAC; Satnall hills and Sherbrook Valley are home to nightjar, adders and small pearl bordered fritillaries, a splendid part of this internationally significant heathland landscape. Further afield, the portfolio includes Hawksmoor: a hidden gem of stunning ancient woodlands and flower rich meadows on the Churnet Valley, and Downs Banks: a locally loved wilderness of woodlands, acid grassland and heath in the heart of the Midlands.

What you'll be doing

As Lead Ranger, you’ll be responsible for the management of a team of 3 Rangers and many more volunteers, who care for Shugborough’s Grade I listed parkland, woodland and heathlands, as well managing Hawksmoor and Downs Banks.

You’ll lead your high performing team to instil a culture of exceptional service; through developing and maintaining walks networks, delivering programming and maintaining high presentation standards across our sites, your team will ensure every visitor has a consistently excellent experience. As part of our Experience Design Project you will help shape Shugborough’s future, developing great outdoor experiences for visitors as the site develops.

Putting conservation at the heart of everything you do you’ll help shape our far-reaching plans for habitat creation and enhancement across the portfolio and you will drive their delivery: planning work programmes, effectively managing resources, engaging specialist contractors and ensuring our visitors and stakeholders are engaged with our work. You will work with our farm team and tenant graziers to deliver great grassland management and will lead on delivering our ambitious parkland management plan to bring Shugborough’s internationally significant designed landscape back to its former glory.

You’ll always be considering how we can reduce our human footprint on the environment with a long-term focus on care and sustainability. You’ll be responsible for managing the budgets and for working with the procurement team centrally to ensure we get the best value when purchasing assets and services.
