Background Information

 

Galloway Forest District is located in South West Scotland, employing over 100 staff who manage approximately 116,000 hectares of the National Forest Estate.

 

Galloway Forest District is also a centre for nature conservation and public recreation with over a quarter of the landholding being managed with conservation and public access as key priorities. We also manage over 30 Sites of Special Scientific Interest, 3 Visitor Centres and have a significant number of Windfarm proposals at various stages of development.

 

Purpose of the Job

 

You will contribute to the Scottish Forestry Strategy and Galloway Forest Districtís Business plan by managing and delivering on relevant sections of the restocking, new planting, environment, recreation and stewardship programmes in a safe and efficient manner. The restocking programme is currently planned to be 1700 hectares per annum and is expected to remain so for a number of years.

 

You will ensure that Forestry Commission Scotlandís (FCS) Policy is upheld and ensure that all legislation, regulation and relevant guidance is adhered to.

  

Key Work Areas

  • Promote a safety first culture in all aspects of the role.
  • Lead, manage and develop staff under your control.
  • Plan, manage and monitor relevant establishment, environment and recreation delivery operations within your designated beat area, as part of the overall district targets/plan.
  • Establish and maintain good lines of communication with internal and external colleagues and stakeholders to ensure common goals are met.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual Business Plan submissions and carry out regular in year monitoring for your beat area.
  • Support for and delivery of procurement and contract management processes associated with Forest Management (FM) and Stewardship contracts and frameworks.

 

Person Specification

 

Experience and Professional/Technical Expertise:

 

Essential

  • HND or equivalent qualification in Forestry, Land Use Management, or a related subject;
  • Demonstrable experience of forestry and land management operations;
  • Competent in the use of IT with reference, GIS and MS Office packages;
  • Demonstrable experience of effectively working well as part of a team.

 

Desirable

  • A proven track record in delivering large scale restocking programmes;
  • Experience in managing and developing staff;
  • Experience in managing operational budgets;
  • Relevant experience in procurement and contract management procedures;
  • Membership, or working towards membership, of the ICF or other relevant professional body.
