Stagfire Ecological Surveys Ltd and associated company Hebridean Adventures Ltd have three opportunities for experienced staff to help with a variety of projects in the north of Scotland and the Western Isles for the spring and summer 2019 season. The positions are available from March through to September/October 2019. There may be the possibility to extend this for suitable candidates.

Hebridean Adventures Ltd is a dynamic new company exploring the sea and the land around the Western Isles.  Hebridean Adventures provide expedition based wildlife-watching trips and based in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, offering day and overnight expeditions on the Monadhliath, a specially converted fishing vessel.  Hebridean Adventures also offers land-based wildlife and cultural tours on Lewis, which will be part of the guides role.

 

Ornithologist/Ecologist

The positions will be based in the north of Scotland, ideally the Inverness area and will involve field survey work, predominantly birds (Vantage Point, Breeding Bird, raptor surveys) and some wider ecology (camera trapping, mammal surveys and ECoW roles)

 

Essential

  • High level of knowledge of the breeding birds (particularly upland birds) of the Highlands of Scotland.
  • A willingness to travel and work in remote locations on your own or as part of a team.
  • A diligent approach to data collection and Microsoft Office skills.
  • A willingness to work some unsociable hours around dawn and dusk and some weekends.
  • A valid UK driving licence.
  • Ability to prove that you have the right to work in the UK.
  • Physically fit and good navigation skills.

 

Desirable

  • Previous survey experience.
  • Botanical (upland NVC), ecological (eg protected species surveys), ECoW or Water Quality Monitoring experience.
  • GIS systems knowledge.
  • A willingness to work as a marine guide with our other associated company Hebridean Adventures.

 

Salary based on experience.

    

 

Marine Wildlife Guide

You will have the opportunity to be a marine wildlife guide on expeditions of up to six days out into the Minch, reaching as far as St.Kilda.

 

The Wildlife Guide will work closely with the Lead guide and Skipper of the vessel, a strong emphasis on ensuring guests are met in a timely and courteous fashion prior to their trip. You will be responsible for identifying species and points of interest to all on board, whilst displaying an in-depth knowledge of the ecology of the Outer Hebrides.  This job is shared with the Lead guide and each guide will be on a rota between boat and land-based trips.

 

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Responsible for scanning and spotting wildlife
  • Offer information on subjects surrounding the ecology of the Outer Hebrides including marine mammals, birds, geology and history.  If you have a specialist interest, please emphasise this in your application.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely with guests
  • Provide excellent care to our guests and ensure their safety at all times
  • Ensuring the vessel is clean and tidy at all times and adhere to vessel protocols
  • Assist other crew with cooking and serving meals for guests
  • Collecting photo id of cetaceans for our data partners, HWDT, WDC

 

Requirements

  • Applicants should ideally hold a natural science degree but this is not a pre-requisite.  If you can demonstrate a passion and commitment for the marine environment and have had experience in this field, your application will be considered.
  • Available from March until October
  • You must hold a full and clean UK driving licence
  • Willing to share a small space with colleagues.  When out at sea you will share crew quarters with the Skipper and deck-hand that has limited space
  • Be a good team player
  • Experience of working on boats would be an advantage
  • Salary based on experience
  • UAS (drone) experience would be useful

 

Accommodation will be available at a reduced rate when not on vessel duties.

      

 

Business Development Facilitator (part time)

This is a new role required for Hebridean Adventures and could be based in the Inverness area or the Isle of Lewis.  Initially with flexible hours and could develop to full time.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • To market Hebridean Adventures and promote what we offer to a national and international audience.
  • Provide administration support for the on-line booking system.
  • To actively monitor and update our social media presence and develop the website.
  • To handle both calls and emails from customers and take bookings for both operations (Stornoway and Loch Ness)
  • To develop business contacts and relations with other tour operators and associated companies in the environmental sector.
  • Ensure that Hebridean Adventures crew follow protocols in relation to the guests experience whilst onboard and manage their expectations.
  • Liaise with crew and ensure they have provisioned the vessel before each trip.

 

Desirable

  • Ability to work unsupervised and be self-motivating
  • An understanding of marine tourism and the marine environment
  • Some boat skills or a willingness to learn and develop these.
  • Willingness to travel between Inverness and Stornoway and possibly be based in Stornoway for extended periods.

 

All positions will offer competitive salary.

 

Closing date for all the positions is: Fri 11th January 2019.  Interviews for field ornithologist will be held in Inverness. Hebridean Adventure positions will take place in Inverness and Stornoway.  Interviews for all Logo: Hebridean Adventures Ltdthree positions will be held in January.
