Maelor Forest Nurseries Limited is an independent company and one of the largest forest tree nurseries in Europe. We are also a registered Seed Testing Station and have an on-site Somatic Embryogenesis laboratory. We operate on a 175-hectare site located just inside Wales on the Welsh/Shropshire border. The management of the business is conducted in line with ISO 9001:2008 standards.

 

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, motivated and focused individual to work closely with our Seed Technician and nursery management team.

 

Full training will be provided. We also encourage and support the personal development of our staff, which could include formal and/or vocational qualifications.

 

Main duties and responsibilities will include;

  • Organising seed collections and seed purchases
  • Liaising with customers, seed collectors, seed suppliers and industry groups
  • Assisting the Seed Technician with seed testing, seed processing and seed despatch
  • Planning, overseeing and assisting with seed sowing operations on the nursery
  • Assessment and supervision of work in our seed orchards
  • Organising and supervising tree pollinations and pollen extraction
  • Involvement with grafting of root stocks

 

Key skills and abilities include;

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a team
  • Strong planning skills and the capability to deliver planned work programmes in a timely manner
  • A flexible hands-on approach, with an aptitude for multi-tasking and prioritising tasks appropriately
  • A close attention to detail and meticulous record keeping
  • Good IT skills, including competence in Microsoft Office
  • A current UK driving licence or a foreign driving license that permits driving in the UK

 

The successful applicant will have a degree or equivalent qualifications in a relevant subject; such as forestry, horticulture, environmental science or the life sciences.
