Private Estate


An experienced part-time Estate Worker/Groundsman is required to join a small team on a historic private estate south of Oxford.


The Grade II * listed manor house has 11 acres of gardens including Italianate formal gardens, herbaceous borders, terraces, a large formal pool, wildlife ponds, a dell, woodland and orchard areas, glasshouses and several outbuildings. The gardens and buildings are currently undergoing renovations.


The estate is managed by a skilled full time Head Gardener who will require assistance with gardening tasks such as mowing, strimming, hedge cutting, chemical application and garden machinery maintenance. There are a further two part-time gardeners and a full-time stonemason.


The Head Gardener welcomes enthusiasm and the desire to learn. Keen gardeners with well-rounded practical garden maintenance skills are invited to apply. Additional support and training will be provided to extend the practical horticultural skill set of any applicant.


Applicants must have minimum of two years practical experience and/or have completed a minimum of a level 2 in horticulture. The successful candidate will need to maintain effective communications with Head Gardener; Owners; Visitors and Contractors and undertake a cost efficient approach to maintenance.


A competitive salary will be based on levels of experience.


Initially 16-20 hours per week with additional hours by mutual agreement and as the garden demands.


General duties

  • Use and maintenance of equipment and machinery.
  • Leaf clearing, drive raking, garden gate maintenance.
  • Lawn care and mowing on a range of grass types.
  • Strimming.
  • Weeding.
  • Maintenance of ponds and pools.
  • Maintenance of hand tools/machinery
  • Pruning and hedge cutting including care of formal parterre.
  • Care of summer and spring bedding schemes.
  • Border maintenance and renovations.
  • Essentials
  • PA1/ PA6 certificates
  • Previous experience in using tractors, ride-on and pedestrian mowers, strimming, hedge cutting and a good knowledge of machinery maintenance and repairs.
  • Clean driving licence.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Respect for clients’ privacy and security.
  • Good problem solving and handyman skills.
  • DBS certificate
  • Desirable
  • A horticultural qualification.
  • Chainsaw licence.
  • Experience in private estate work
