Ecological Advisor and Predator Control Officer (separate positions)

BirdWatch Ireland, on behalf of the Curlew EIP Operational Group (OG) is looking for an Ecological Advisor and a Predator Control Officer to assist with the delivery of The Irish Breeding Curlew EIP in South Leitrim, funded by the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine’s, European Innovation Partnership fund. The project will trial innovative programmes to improve breeding outcomes for Curlew in these areas, including: training farmers in predator control; nest protection through electric fencing; capital works to improve habitats; and a results based measure for Curlew. 


The Ecological Advisor will survey and monitor breeding Curlew populations, and nest sites for breeding outcomes. They will provide advice and training to participating farmers on managing their land for Curlew, and assist in the trial of temporary electric fences. Candidates ​are expected to have experience in carrying out breeding wader surveys, managing land for breeding waders, dealing with landowners and report writing. 


The Predator Control Officer will undertake systematic predator control at known breeding sites in the south Leitrim area. They will assist in the development and delivery of a trial Agri Environmental measure for farmers undertaking predator control. Thorough knowledge of the legal requirements relating to the control of predators in Ireland and strong initiative and willingness to work for long, sometimes unsociable hours is essential.
