About us

The Woodland Trust is the UKís leading woodland conservation charity.  We want to see a UK rich in native woods and trees, for people and wildlife. The Trust aims to engage and inspire people about woods and trees to help us meet our vision of creating, restoring and protecting woodland. We own and care for over 1,000 woodland sites across the United Kingdom and support the creation and management of woodland on land outside the Trustís own estate.

Our vision is that the Ben Shieldaig Estate will become a thriving and robust mosaic of native woodland and open habitats that improve the environment and create a healthier, more resilient home for wildlife and people. We will work with our neighbours and other partners to make a difference at a truly landscape scale. The project will inspire others and benefit our cause through increased profile and support for the Trust and our work.

The role
As our Site Manager for Ben Shieldaig, you will work closely with the Project Development Manager in ensuring the estate is managed to the highest professional standards and in accordance with the Woodland Trustís management approach and policies. You will lead on land management, in particular you will ensure the existing native pinewoods on site are being protected and enhanced, create and maintain up to 500ha of new native woodland, deer management and forestry grant applications. You will also be developing visitor access infrastructure and interpretation.

The candidate
With extensive experience in forestry or conservation land management including native woodland creation at scale, preferably in Highland Scotland, youíll have significant woodland management experience and be qualified to HND/degree level in forestry, land management or a related field. Familiarity with UKWAS certification is desirable.

Youíll have demonstrable experience of managing complex projects and of working with communities, volunteers and wide range of stakeholders to achieve results. Budget management is essential.  Youíll need to be self- motivated, a results focussed individual with excellent communication skills, be commercially and self-aware and be able to work on your own and collaboratively.   

A full driving licence is essential and youíll need to be able to work from home and within reasonable travelling distance of the Ben Shieldaig area.
