Rangers play a hugely important role at the National Trust, thinking long term to look after our special places. Our new strategy for Land Outdoors and Nature means that we are investing in front line ranger services to help us deliver positive changes at a landscape scale. We are looking to recruit a Lead Ranger to join our team in Plas Newydd to ensure excellent, sustainable care and conservation is delivered across our land, be it our agricultural tenancies or our historic parklands.

Please note the ability to speak fluently in Welsh is essential for this role.

What it's like to work here

Plas Newydd is an elegant mansion and gardens with spectacular views across the Menai Strait to the mountains of Snowdonia. Visitors come to Plas Newydd from all over the world and the 18-member team welcome friendly, hospitable people with exceptional customer service skills to join them. You are likely to need your own transport to get here, however this is an exciting opportunity to work within a vibrant property in a truly breath-taking location.

What you'll be doing

This role involves being part of the Portfolio Senior Management Team. You値l report directly to the General Manager, and will manage an Assistant Ranger and volunteers, working closely with the rest of the Heads of Departments across the portfolio.

You'll develop and coordinate a wide range of cyclical and response operations, commission specialist contractors and contribute to a programme of conservation and engagement projects. You値l use your leadership skills and experience in countryside management to drive forward our ambitious plans for conservation and visitor engagement.

You値l put conservation at the heart of everything you do. You値l be planning and delivering a programme of work to deliver our nature conservation ambitions, support our farm tenants and develop recreation and access opportunities across the estates. You値l always be considering how we can reduce our human footprint on the environment with a long-term focus on care and sustainability.

Leading your team of staff and volunteers, you値l ensure every visitor receives a high quality, consistent welcome with access to our unique stories which bring these special places to life. You will be responsible for managing the budgets required to deliver this work and for protecting and enhancing the Trust痴 assets and reputation. Due to the number of partner organisations, tenants, neighbours, activity providers and local stakeholders some of your time will be spent sharing our vision and working in partnership with others to help deliver it.

This role offers a great opportunity for someone with a balance of strong practical, engagement and management skills. Central to the role will be your ability to balance both the demands of managing and developing our countryside estates with those of a busy, high profile visitor environment.

Who we're looking for

To deliver this role successfully, you値l be a proven leader, proud to work in such beautiful locations and thrive on delivering exceptional care for our environment and our visitors. So, you値l be;

  • An experienced people manager with the ability to lead a team to deliver effectively
  • An excellent communicator with experience in stakeholder management
  • Experienced in project management
  • Experienced in relevant land, conservation and access management
  • Customer aware and take pride on delivering excellent customer service
  • Organised and self-motivated, confidently able to manage a demanding workload with competing pulls on your time
  • Confident in managing budgets, finances and contracts
  • Knowledgeable in health and safety requirements and other compliance issues relating to the countryside and visitor activities

The package

Benefits include flexible working whenever possible plus free parking at most locations. You値l be entitled to discounts in high street stores and cinemas, National Trust shops and NT cafes, and have free entry to NT properties for you, a guest and your children (under 18).

Your health and wellbeing is important to us and is supported through generous annual leave and the option to buy additional days (minimum contract length applies), a cycle to work scheme, subsidised health cash plan and confidential access to a free support service 24 hours a day should you need it.

Your future financial health is helped by an employer matched - up to 10% of basic salary - contributory pension scheme and you can further your career with training and development tailored to you.

All of this and the opportunity to give something back to your community with up to 5 days of paid volunteering per year!
