Summary

 

We are looking for an experienced Lead Ranger to manage one of the most beautiful countryside portfolios in the National Trust – the West Lakes, Cumbria. There are huge opportunities here balancing conservation, cultural landscape, estate maintenance, relationships with farmers and visitor engagement; which is both challenging and rewarding. A part of this role will include working with and through partner bodies such as Natural England, the Lake District National Park, and others so you’ll need experience in partnership working.

 

PLEASE NOTE: This is a two year fixed term contract due to end when the previous employee returns from their secondment.

 

What it's like to work here

 

Working as Lead Ranger for the West Lakes, you will be responsible for the ranger team, and the outdoor membership recruitment team. Working in some of the nation’s most stunning places and spaces, come rain or shine, your love of the outdoors will inspire others as you strive to ensure that the land in our care is managed in a way which is sustainable, and balances conservation, farming and public access.

 

This area covers Wasdale, Eskdale and the Duddon Valley – which includes some of the Lake District’s highest mountains, Scafell Pike, Scafell & Great Gable. We have England’s deepest and cleanest lake – Wastwater; significant areas of common land; and 26 farms.

 

What you'll be doing

 

Leading a resourceful team of staff and volunteers, you will build relationships with our farm tenants, deliver great conservation, provide public access and manage outdoor visitor welcome and membership recruitment. Working with our farm tenants, partner organisations, and other individuals you’ll need to be engaging and enabling to deliver across these areas.

Who we're looking for

 

To be successful in this role you'll need;

  • Significant and extensive experience in relevant land, conservation and access management
  • To inspire others with your passion for nature, heritage and the outdoors
  • To champion great levels of presentation and service within the team and at our sites.
  • Excellent people skills enabling strong relationships externally and internally, to be built and maintained
  • Leadership skills including coaching, team development, motivation, communication and setting strategic direction
  • Experience of working with and through farm tenants
  • Experience of working with volunteers
  • Proven ability of managing budgets, finances, projects and large contracts
  • Significant experience of managing operational risk and know how to assess and manage risk effectively. Knowledge of all Health & Safety and Compliance requirements relevant to a countryside setting
