Senior Learning & Engagement Officer


Thanks to a successful bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Sussex Wildlife Trust are seeking an experienced learning and engagement specialist to deliver key activities as part of the Discover Rye Harbour Project.


Location: Rye Harbour Discovery Centre, East Sussex

Salary: £25,900 - £27,200 per annum

Contract Type: Fixed term for 3 years

Hours: Full time (35 hours a week) including weekends and evenings


Rye Harbour Discovery Centre


The Discovery Centre, which is currently under construction, will be Sussex Wildlife Trustís first visitor centre and has been generously supported by The Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, the local community and a range of funders. The 1,110 acre reserve is one of the most biodiverse places in Britain with 4,200 plant and animal species recorded, and over 200 rare or endangered birds and mammals. It also hosts a range of historic buildings. As well as engaging more annual visitors in this exceptional natural and human heritage area through exciting interpretation, the project will attract new visitors to visit the nature reserve.  Supported by an extensive volunteer development programme, it will also boost the reserveís conservation capabilities, improving habitats for endangered species and securing a more sustainable future for the reserve.


The Role


The senior learning and engagement officer is responsible for the organisation and implementation of the education and events programme at Rye Harbour Discovery Centre & Nature Reserve with the aim of promoting engagement, enjoyment and understanding of ecology and environmental issues. They will play a key role in delivering the ambitious activity plan which is integral to the National Lottery Heritage Fund Discover Rye Harbour project.


The Person


You will need to have significant experience of working in the environmental education sector or the voluntary sector with young people. A competent manager of staff and volunteers, the successful candidate will have a good grasp of the national curriculum and ideally a relevant training / education qualification. As the centre will be open seven days a week, you will be comfortable working varied hours and shifts including weekends, evenings and bank holidays.
