Logo: Natural EnglandNatural England requires two Reserve Wardens to work on our National Nature Reserves near Peterborough.

Salary Minimum is 17,863

 

Theses posts are for two permanent full time roles, joining established NNR colleagues within the West Anglia Area Team of Natural England. These Reserve Warden roles will be responsible for leading practical management work on a series of National Nature Reserves primarily Barnack Hills and Holes; Castor Hanglands; Collyweston Great Wood and Easton Hornstocks; Holme Fen; Monks Wood; and Woodwalton Fen.

 

You will support colleagues to deliver the agreed aims of our NNR Management Plans, carrying out tasks either directly or through leading volunteers and contractors. You will work under the day to day supervision of Reserve Managers, with active support and steer from other senior members of the team. The post will require use of a variety of machinery and vehicles, and involves working in all weathers and on difficult terrain.

 

Tasks associated with this role will include:

  • Under the direction of senior colleagues, undertake practical land management to ensure favourable condition of our NNR sites;
  • Maintain a safe and legal working environment for staff and visitors, including the maintenance of site machinery and equipment;
  • Maintenance of reserve infrastructure to include, board walks, bridges, fences, trackways and visitor management/interpretation signs;
  • Collection of biological survey and monitoring information for notable species and habitats, and the recording of other environmental data on the NNRs;
  • Provision of information to visitors, colleagues and external partners about the NNRs, our activities and the natural history of the sites. Assist with and/or lead walks and events on the sites;
  • In agreement with senior colleagues, contribute to and/or lead on collaborative projects, both within the wider Area Team and with external partners.

 

Evidence required of attaining qualification, or able to demonstrate actively working towards the standard required:

 

Essential

  • Outdoor First Aid or First Aid at Work
  • Tractor Driving and use of attachments
  • Chainsaw NPTC  
  • Ability to drive 4x4 vehicles and ATVs on and off road, including the use of trailers
  • Pesticide PA1a, PA6A(W)

 

Desirable

  • Use of Brush cutter
  • Use of Chippers
  • Experience of working on nature reserves, countryside parks or for a forestry or landscape management company
  • Familiarity with SSSI legislation and how it relates to operating on a National Nature Reserve
  • Knowledge or awareness of the natural interest of these sites;
  • Interest in and awareness of conservation of wetlands, reed beds and peat bogs, woodlands and grasslands;

 

A Driving Licence is essential for the role.
