We are looking for an enthusiastic naturalist to inspire new volunteers to get involved with the Orkney Native Wildlife Project. 

 

The Orkney Native Wildlife Project aims to safeguard the internationally important native wildlife of Orkney now and into the future by addressing the threat it faces from an invasive non-native predator: the stoat.

Salary: 19,602 - 21,236 per annum
Hours: Full time
Contract: 5 years

You will be responsible for the component of the project that aims to increase knowledge of species population trends in Orkney through co-ordinating native species surveys across the county and encouraging volunteer participation in wildlife surveying or monitoring remote nest camera footage. Focus species/groups will include the Orkney vole, meadow pipit, skylark, waders, birds of prey and seabirds. You will also set up a web page where stoat and native species sightings can be easily reported by both local residents and visitors.

Other key tasks will include: 

 

  • Organising events to recruit volunteers across the islands. 
  • Delivering training for undertaking species surveys and work closely with stakeholders.
  • Assisting the Education Officer with school field trips to ensure any data collected is useable. 
  • Designing survey methodologies alongside a Conservation Scientist to ensure that any new data collected can be compared to existing data. 
  • Ensuring land access permissions have been granted for any monitoring work.
  • Undertaking surveys.

 

You will have excellent identification skills and experience undertaking surveys to monitor a range of species. You will have the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences in a sensitive manner. You will have the skills and experience necessary to recruit, train and inspire a team of volunteers.
