15,925 per annum for 35 hour week + 7% pension contribution.

This role will be for an initial period of 12 months with the possibility of a permanent position


The Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation links Heybridge Basin with Chelmsford via 12 locks and is a unique resource for public recreation and wildlife.  The aim of Essex Waterways is to operate and manage the Navigation as a not for profit business for public benefit. 


We have an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Lengthsman to help with practical tasks as well as crewing the trip boat, Victoria.

35 hours per week, including regular weekend work from Easter to October.

It is the Trainee Lengthsman's role to;


  1. Support the Senior Lengthsman in undertaking practical maintenance work along the navigation in a safe and efficient manner.
  2. Support the operation of Chelmer Cruises trip boats.


Key Responsibilities


  • To act as regular crew member on trip boat Victoria (potential to train as boat skipper).
  • To undertake regular maintenance and upkeep of Victoria.
  • To Assist the Senior Lengthsman as required.
  • To maintain water levels throughout the length of the Navigation with particular attention to Baddow sluices in times of drought and flood.
  • To keep the Navigation, its locks and weirs clear of obstructions and debris.
  • To maintain the Navigation and its towpath including cutting grass and hedges and keeping this clean and tidy.
  • To look after the company's willow plantation including husbandry and replanting. This will include assisting with removal of mature trees.
  • To carry out weed cutting and removal during the growing season.
