Summary

The voice of our landscapes, conservation champion and lover of all things outdoors, you’ll help to keep the British countryside and coast wonderful. Based at the White Cliffs of Dover your time will be spent working across some of the nation’s most iconic coastal places. Come rain or shine, your love of the outdoors will inspire others as you strive to ensure that landscapes are beautifully presented and continue to take our visitors’ breath away.

What it's like to work here

The White Cliffs of Dover Property amounts to more than 500ha of coast and countryside. This includes cliff top chalk grassland, farmland, sand dunes and salt marsh habitat with areas of ancient dune pasture, vegetated shingle and woodland. Key groups of species include chalk grassland flowers and butterflies; farmland birds; raptors; breeding & wintering shorebirds and waders, and breeding seabirds.

The area attracts an increasing number of visitors every year, with around 450,000 visitors to the White Cliffs each year, around 100,000 visitors to South Foreland Lighthouse and around 10,000 to Fan Bay Deep Shelter. There are multiple designations covering these areas, with all of the cliff top chalk grassland being SSSI and SAC and sitting within Kent Downs AONB. Sandwich and Pegwell Bay is an NNR, a RAMSAR site, SAC, SPA and SSSI.

Beside the ranger team, the wider team includes the visitor welcome, retail and catering teams at Langdon Cliffs and South Foreland Lighthouse as well as a property business support team. You'll be based at our offices at Langdon Cliffs but will need to travel throughout the portfolio and to occasional training sessions and meetings.

What you'll be doing

With your endless passion for our work, you'll help with the protection and care of habitats, wildlife, property and machinery, and your passion will inspire others to love this beautiful place as much as you do. Working alongside a Lead and Assistant Rangers, you'll help manage the beautiful East Kent Coast, including Great Farthingloe, Langdon Cliffs, Fox Hill Down, Fan Bay, Lighthouse Down, Bockhill Farm and Kingsdown Leas, as well as working with partners at Sandwich and Pegwell Bay NNR. This is a particularly exciting time to join the team as we have recently acquired Wanstone, 72ha of farmland inland from the White Cliffs and have plans to revert areas to species rich grassland, whilst also farming for wildlife. The National Trust’s Land, Outdoors & Nature ambition will help us to protect the very special wildlife here, from Adonis Blue butterflies to rare orchids and Corn Buntings.

We want you to engage with visitors, making time to talk to them, enabling them to experience and understand the coast and gaining support for the work we do. As an easily identifiable member of the Ranger team, on your best day you will be creating lasting memories for everyone. You’ll share and promote the work that we do here, ensuring special places like these are here to be both protected and enjoyed by everyone for ever. This will see you responding to queries and explaining the value of the work being undertaken. After all, your passion and dedication could fire the imagination that makes a visitor become a supporter for the rest of their life.

You’ll make sure that, at every twist and turn of these fantastic landscapes, we’re delivering outstanding outdoors experiences and excellent conservation work. You’ll share our common goal with customers and build relationships in the local community, proudly representing the National Trust. So whether you’re maintaining our countryside spaces or assisting with wildlife surveys, no two days will be the same.

In this role, you’ll work some weekends, bank holidays, early mornings and evenings on a rota basis.
