The voice of our landscapes, conservation champion and lover of all things outdoors, you’ll help to keep the British countryside and coast wonderful. Working in some of the nation’s most stunning places and spaces, come rain or shine, your love of the outdoors will inspire others as you strive to ensure that landscapes are beautifully presented and continue to take our visitors’ breath away. We need an experienced Countryside Manager, to be based within the Purbeck Estate the most bio diverse area in the UK, who can take on this brand new role and make it their own. There are huge opportunities here and juggling conservation, estate maintenance and visitor engagement is both challenging and rewarding. A large part of this role will include working with and through partner bodies such as Natural England, RSBP, Wildlife trust and DEFRA so you’ll need strong experience in partnership working.

The area, famed for its beaches, castle and countryside, is home to some of the rarest species in the UK, including British reptiles. A strong conservation and access focus and year-round open access means work at Purbeck Island requires energy and commitment, and the roles are fun and varied in a unique location.


What you'll be doing

Leading a dynamic and resourceful team of staff and volunteers, delivering a nationally acclaimed conservation programme of work, whilst providing an access and engagement programme that delivers for all. Working with a number of partner organisations, bodies and individuals you’ll need to be engaging and enabling so as to encourage and deliver a strong programme. Part of a team, both locally regional and national supporting and working with and through others the role requires leadership and a strong ability to understand and support the priorities of the property.


Who we're looking for

To be successful in this role you'll need to able to have;

  • Significant and extensive experience in relevant land, conservation and access management, supported by appropriate qualifications to level 6 (or equivalent level of vocational experience)
  • Proven track record of planning activities programmes which deliver great visitor experience within a countryside setting
  • Leadership skills including coaching, team development, motivation, communication and setting strategic direction
  • Experience of working with volunteers and knowledge of the framework that the Trust uses to support the volunteer journey. Evidence of understanding the differences between staff and volunteers, particularly the legal framework, the approach to reward and recognition and different motivations
  • Excellent people skills enabling strong relationships externally and internally, to be built and maintained
  • Proven track record of managing budgets, finances, projects and large contracts
  • Track record of inspiring others with your passion for nature, heritage and the outdoors
  • Significant experience of managing operational risk, including how to assess and manage risk effectively. Knowledge of all Health & Safety and Compliance requirements relevant to a countryside setting
