Background Information

Moray & Aberdeenshire Forest District covers the National Forest Estate in north east Scotland. It comprises approximately 58,000 hectares of woodlands ranging from coastal pine forests like Culbin in the north west through productive upland spruce plantations in the central and eastern parts of the District, the iconic pinewoods of Speyside and Deeside and peri urban WIAT woodlands on the outskirts of Aberdeen City. The District is silviculturally diverse with a high proportion of continuous cover forestry and large thinnings programme. The District also welcomes approximately 1.8 million day visits annually with key recreational centres at Bennachie, Countesswells, and Culbin.

 

The main Forest District office is based in Huntly. There is also a number of out posted teams based across the unit including Newton near Elgin and Durris near Banchory which is where this post is based.

 

Purpose of the Job

To assist delivery of the Community and Visitor Services programme working as part of a frontline Forest Craftsperson maintenance team. The work will be predominantly outdoors and physically demanding assisting in the maintenance and construction of recreational facilities including footpaths, carparks, visitor centres and large commercial Christmas tree sales operation. The team also provide support to all other aspects of the business supporting delivery of timber harvesting, conservation and forest management activity.

 

Key Work Areas

  • Inspection and maintenance of way-marked trails/ car-parks / picnic areas, recording and rectifying any problems and managing the sites to keep them in a condition which is welcoming, and safe, through vegetation management and litter clearance;
  • Maintenance of paths, fencing and gates;
  • Maintenance of signage, way-marking and picnic furniture to a high standard;
  • Assisting with the organisation and delivery of public events including at our Christmas tree sales centre;
  • Forest management and estates duties including, but not exclusively, chainsaw work, tree planting, beating-up, weeding, fencing and maintenance of gates;

 

Person Specification

Experience and Professional/Technical Expertise

 

Essential:

  • Demonstrable experience of practical countryside work including recreation facility maintenance; for example footpath repairs;
  • Demonstrable experience using health and safety systems in connection with practical countryside work; e.g. risk assessment, Forest Industry Safety Accord (FISA) guides, lone working systems etc;
  • Demonstrable experience of public engagement activity;
  • NPTC certification in one or more of chainsaw, clearing saw, quads / ATVs;
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office Packages particularly Word, Excel and Outlook.

 

Desirable:

  • B+E on driving license (towing trailers greater than 750kg)
