As a part of an ongoing investment into our Land and Nature objectives we are now looking for a National Specialist - Trees and Woodland Adviser to take on this new role, to help us deliver on our huge ambitions for revitalising the role that Trees and Woodlands have in the National Trust. As the 2nd largest Woodland owner in the UK, the National Trust cares for over 26,000 hectares of varied and predominantly native woodlands. The Trust also has millions of trees in its gardens, parks and wider countryside including more ancient, veteran and notable trees than any other owner.

We're prioritising our work to restore nature across our entire estate, engaging people with the countryside, in particular Trees and Woodlands and bringing woodlands back into sustainable productive use where appropriate. As the National Specialist, you'll be at the forefront of helping us achieve these aims.

What it's like to work here

We’re bigger than you think, we’re more complicated than we appear and we’re larger scale than you’d imagine. We’ve got passionate people in all our teams, and we’ve got so much more we want to achieve. We’re for ever, for everyone and we really mean that. We don’t want to stop at 5.5 million members and we want everyone to feel welcome and enjoy access to our places, so we need to reach new audiences in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them without losing the hearts and minds of those that are already with us.

Our central head office Heelis, is situated in Swindon, Wiltshire. We're well placed, with ample parking nearby, a shopping outlet with plenty of options for places to eat, and the town centre only a 10 minute walk away. Alternatively you can enjoy our open plan atrium space for lunch times, with our internal café available every day.

What you'll be doing

This new role will give you the opportunity to provide top class specialist advice to the organisation in this physically hands on role. You'll be out in the woodlands and wider countryside with our outdoors teams, providing training and expert advice about our ancient and veteran trees and new tree and woodland establishment. You'll work with our passionate teams to ensure our Trees and Woodland discipline is working to best practise and safe.

As well as providing expert consultancy advice, you'll deliver regular training and ensure that Health and Safety, contractor management and planning are also well managed.

There are exciting projects to be part of too. We know that our woodlands are changing, and you'll be at the forefront of helping us manage the big changes that are coming for trees and woods, including, climate change and the pressures that new diseases are bringing to our woodlands. We'll need to work closely with our existing partners to deliver these priorities, and you'll work with external experts to help us manage and face into these coming changes. You'll understand how vital these, and new, partnerships are to our aims. We'll only achieve our aims with the help of these partnerships.

Who we're looking for

You'll need to truly have conservation at heart, and to be successful in this role, you'll need to:

  • Have long standing hands on practical and financial experience with Trees and Woodlands
  • Fully engage with the emotive elements of trees and woodlands, and understand how they can inspire others
  • Understand the benefits of trees and woodland, and be able to inspire others with your passion for them
  • Have an organised approach to your work, able to get into the detail as well as have a strategic approach
  • Have experience of facilitation and delivery of training
  • Understand what makes a top-class consultant, and have a collaborative approach
