Rangers have been a part of the National Trust since the beginning, our place in the organisations future means that we need to think long term about how we look after our special places.


We are looking for a motivated individual who is passionate about the coast and countryside, you should be confident in engaging with people and getting the message about East Headís fragile habitats across and how we manage the site to conserve them. The successful candidate should have a full UK driving licence and some experience of working outdoor and delivering engagement activities; you should also be willing to work alone as well as being part of a wider team at based at the Slindon Estate.


What it's like to work here


East Head is a sand and shingle spit stretching into the entrance of Chichester Harbour and one of the last surviving pieces of natural coastline in West Sussex.


With almost every wildlife designation imaginable, East Head supports a wide array of unusual and rare wildlife. East Headís distinct and fragile habitats include - shingle, sandy beach, dunes and salt-marsh.


East Head attracts hundreds of thousands people all year round for birdwatching, walking their dogs on the beach and exploring the sand dunes. During the summer, East Head plays hosts to families from far and wide that come to enjoy a more natural beach experience and enjoying one of the best in Sussex to walk, play and sunbathe on.

What you'll be doing


Itís our responsibility as beach rangers to enhance both the natural environment and the experience of our visitors. It is a physically demanding role and no two days at East Head are the same; conducting wildlife surveys, making repairs to boardwalks and keeping the site tidy are just some of the things you will be asked to do. Over the summer holidays youíll be part of the team delivering a program of engagement activities with children and families, these activities are designed to strengthen the bond that people have with East Head and the outdoors as a whole. This role is for 4 days a week including every weekend.


Who we're looking for


To deliver this role successfully, you'll need to:

  • Demonstrate a willingness to work alongside volunteers and be able to support them to perform at their best
  • Have a commitment to customer service standards and experience of its delivery
  • Demonstrate a passion for nature and the outdoors
  • Have good written and verbal communication skills
  • Have good people skills enabling strong relationships externally and internally, to be built and maintained


And you'll need to demonstrate the following experience on your CV

  • Practical experience in land, conservation and access management, to level 2 (or equivalent level of vocational experience).
  • Some experience of delivering engagement activities that help build or strengthen visitorsí connections with nature and the outdoors
  • Familiarity with machinery/equipment and practical certificates as required by the property
