Do you have a keen interest in woodland and tree maintenance? Would you prefer your office to be the great outdoors? Do you want to work in a beautiful location? If so, this could be the role for you.

What it's like to work here

Our South Lakes property in the Lake District is one of the most diverse, interesting and challenging properties in the whole of The National Trust. Millions of people visit the Lakes every year and one of our key challenges is how to connect more and better with these people, from all round the world, when they are here. We look after some of the most beautiful and iconic parts of the Lake District around Hawkshead/Coniston and Windermere with very strong links to Beatrix Potter and her legacy of land, farms and buildings and artwork.

We work within our national and regional strategy and vision and increasingly closely with our colleagues in the 5 other property units across the whole of the Lakes, to ensure a consistent quality experience for everyone who comes into contact with us.

What you'll be doing

Working as part of a National Trust commercial forestry operations team, your role will cover all aspects of tree and woodland management. You will help deliver the annual forestry work programme as well as any unplanned work. You may supervise a small team of volunteers. You will work effectively alongside our tenants and partners in the local community in order to protect and enhance the Trustís assets and reputation.

In this role, you will be using chainsaws (training will be provided if you don't have any qualifications) on a day to day basis, working on trees ranging from 0.1 to 2 tonnes in weight, and working on steep slopes. The terrain of the Lake District woodlands can often mean carrying heavy loads over long distances such as fencing materials, and therefore you will require a chainsaw qualification and a good level of fitness to fulfil the needs of the role.

  • Practical experience working in a woodland / countryside environment supported by appropriate level 3 qualification or equivalent
