Job Profile: Volunteer Development Officer

Location: Hybrid working in Edinburgh

Job Responsibilities: Overall, to manage and develop the Trust’s volunteering programme. Specifically to ensure there are enough volunteers, to manage the induction process, maintain a volunteer database, seek funding for volunteer programmes, support volunteer managers, lead on volunteer policies ensuring the Trust is compliant with rules, regulations, to liaise & advise volunteer managers as required, promote a volunteer culture, provide management information as required. The job is an enabling one; to support the work of volunteers within the Trust.

Majority of time is spent doing: volunteer recruitment, liaising internally & externally on volunteer matters, organising training, acting as centre contact for internal network of Lantra instructors, answering queries from potential volunteers. Time is mainly spent indoors.

There is slight seasonal variation - we tend to do a lot of volunteer recruitment for our summer residential roles early in the year.

Qualifications needed: No special qualifications needed.

Additional training: Training in Volunteer management useful.

Skills needed: An affinity with volunteering and to see things from a volunteer perspective very useful, ability to liaise with internal and external contacts. Admin, IT and communication skills essential. Volunteer management useful.


Advice to anyone looking at similar roles:

If you are looking for an outdoor, hands-on job in the environmental sector directly connected with nature/the environment then this is not for you. However, the impact of volunteering can be a powerful positive force and if you want to help the organisation achieve “on the ground” conservation outputs but from the background, then this could be of interest to you.
