Job Profile: Conservation & Nature Reserves Manager

Job Responsibilities:

Site manage six Local Nature Reserves, advise on conservation & biodiversity issues across another seven countryside sites, responsible for additional protected sites, SAC, SSSI Ramsar. Advise senior team on current environmental legislation and manage the Volunteer in Parks programme.

The majority of time is spent liaising with internal and external partners, sourcing grant funding and managing contractors on site.

Time is spent 40% outdoors 60% indoors. I tend to be busier outdoors supervising contractors in the winter period, summer is more surveys and visitor management.

 

Qualifications needed:

Experience in habitat management, Phase 1 surveying, GIS, public interaction, Practitioner of Countryside Management Association. Specialist surveying e.g. protected species.

Additional training: DBS

Skills needed: Building relationships, pragmatic and realistic approach to conservation objectives, good written and oral skills, report writing.

Get as much quality volunteering experience, be hungry to learn new skills and have a broad view of what conservation in the UK actually looks like – you have to get on with people whose jobs and views of conservation may be an anathema to yourself.
