Job Profile: Community Engagement Officer (Tourism)

Job Responsibilities:

Support and encourage tourism businesses to develop new products, services and experiences based around the National Park’s special qualities through various tourism grant schemes. Support the delivery of the Tourism associated measures related to the Boulby Mine’s s106 agreement predominantly in Staithes and surrounding parishes.

Some of my time is spent meeting businesses and community groups out and about to discuss how we may be able to support them through one of our grant schemes but I also need some desk time to process grant applications. I visit the Staithes area very regularly for lots of different reasons – this can be anything from meeting with the Staithes business group to discuss what we can do to improve visitor experience in the area to putting a new geocache trail in place! I also spend time with internal colleagues to create volunteering opportunities, understand how we can improve infrastructure for visitors and look at ways to encourage active travel to areas.

Time is spent mostly indoors!

 

Qualifications needed:

Relevant degree level qualification in tourism or relevant equivalent experience. However, I don’t have a degree and didn’t have any experience in the tourism sector at my time of applying. However, I did have experience of engaging with businesses, schools and community groups through my previous trainee role at the North York Moors National Park in the Conservation and Climate change department.

Skills needed: Being friendly and patient is a must as the application process for grants can feel tough for some! Being open minded to individual ideas is also important and being able to justify any reasoning you have. Organisation is important as you can be juggling several different projects at once – also understanding what needs to be prioritised.

 

Advice to anyone looking at similar roles:

From my experience with the North York Moors National Park – if you’re friendly, open minded and organised you should consider applying for a role like this, don’t let the need for a degree level qualification put you off if you don’t have one. I am learning on the job from a passionate and committed team who answer even my silliest of questions and I’m so grateful I was given the opportunity.
