Education must adapt to the environmental and societal challenges of our time. We must prepare ourselves to live and thrive in a rapidly changing world, and adjust to the fluctuations that entails for systems, society, and our soils.

Climate change, biodiversity loss, and shifting land use patterns are reshaping priorities. As natural systems face unprecedented threats, the demand for individuals equipped with interdisciplinary skills—spanning ecology, systems thinking, creative problem solving, and community engagement—has never been greater.

Black Mountains College (BMC), addresses this need with a distinctive curriculum designed to integrate scientific understanding with creative and practical problem-solving. Nestled in the heart of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in Wales, BMC offers a transformative approach to education and training, equipping students with the tools, knowledge, and experiences needed to make a meaningful impact in a changing world. Delivered in this stunning outdoor environment, the surrounding landscapes range from ancient woodlands to upland habitats, providing a living classroom where students can observe and engage with nature directly.

Whether you’re a seasoned professional looking to deepen your expertise or a newcomer passionate about entering a particular field, BMC’s range of higher education and vocational courses—including its BA (Hons) Sustainable Futures: Arts, Ecology and Systems Change, Level 2 NVQ in Nature Recovery, Level 3 Traineeship in Regenerative Farming & Agroecology, Level 2 NVQ in Coppicing and Greenwood Working, and Level 2 NVQ in Regenerative Horticulture—offers something unique for everyone. All courses emphasise holistic, systems-based thinking with hands-on experiences.

What can Black Mountains College offer?

The BA (Hons) Sustainable Futures degree combines cutting-edge climate science, environmental studies and history, and ecological principles with critical thinking, creative practice, and systems change to empower students to address complex environmental and social challenges. Modules prepare participants to address real-world problems, while opportunities for research and collaboration with partners provide practical insights into the sector.

The Level 2 NVQ in Nature Recovery meets the needs of those aspiring to join the countryside and conservation sectors. Designed to equip learners with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary for contributing to nature recovery and conservation efforts, the course focuses on habitat management, practical techniques for ecosystem restoration, species identification and monitoring, and strategies for managing land to enhance biodiversity. Students also design and carry out a practical conservation project from start to finish.

For those who may want to focus on sustainable agriculture, the Level 3 Traineeship in Regenerative Farming & Agroecology is the route to opt for. The challenges of climate change and fluctuating economic environments ask farmers to diversify for resilience. Agroecology is recognised as an effective approach for promoting biodiversity and enhancing the resilience of ecosystems. Informed by traditional global practices, agroecology explores the use of natural systems to promote good food for everyone, forever. The traineeship enables participants to understand regenerative agricultural techniques, learn about soil health, crop diversity, and sustainable food systems and gain hands-on experience with local farms during work experience placements. This course provides the knowledge and tools to implement sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local communities.

With a stronger focus on sustainable land and woodland management, our Coppicing & Greenwood Trades Level 2 NVQ responds to the increasing demand for sustainable forestry practices and traditional woodland management techniques. Expanding coppicing practices could greatly support the conservation and restoration of woodland biodiversity. This course focuses on practical coppicing methods, crafting greenwood products, and managing woodlands for biodiversity and sustainable yield. By focusing on sustainable forestry, it aligns with broader goals of carbon sequestration and ecosystem services.

The Regenerative Horticulture Level 2 NVQ promotes ways of growing food whilst restoring soil health and promoting biodiversity. It involves low impact production that does not rely on fossil fuel fertilisers and toxic pesticides. Locally grown fruit and vegetables make economic and environmental sense, and they are better for you too! Regenerative Horticulture encompasses the principles organics, no-dig, and permaculture - holistic design that simulates natural ecosystems. Symbiosis between humankind and soil is the key to planetary health. By supporting the ecosystem, we are supporting biology, which in turn supports the soil and the plants that live there.
