The Big Cat Sanctuary Established as the World’s First Centre for Species Survival Partnership For Wild Cat Conservation Globally - IUCN

Kent, UK - 19th August 2025 — In a major step forward for wild cat conservation, The Big Cat Sanctuary, in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission (SSC), is proud to announce the launch of the world’s first Centre for Species Survival (CSS) dedicated exclusively to wild cats globally. Developed in close collaboration with the respected SSC Cat Specialist Group (CatSG), the new Centre positions the Sanctuary as a pivotal hub for the protection and recovery of wild cat species worldwide, and is only one of 25 such conservation centres globally.

The Sanctuary joins a prestigious group of just thirty Centres worldwide that are uniquely positioned as hubs for species conservation, which are strategic partnerships that advance species conservation through science, fieldwork, and collaboration. These Centres accelerate the IUCN Red List assessments, develop and implement species recovery strategies, and promote evidence-based conservation. Working closely with the CatSG, the Sanctuary will support efforts to protect all 40 wild cat species from well-known icons like the Sumatran tiger and Iberian lynx to lesser-known species such as the African golden cat and jaguarundi.
