The Society for the Environment (SocEnv) defines the standards for professional competence in environmental practice, ensuring key decisions are made by verified professionals. Our vision is a sustainable future shaped by environmental professionalism.
We do this through registering and championing professionals with proven competence in their environmental work. As you are working in the countryside and wildlife conservation sectors, you can also be part of that mission by taking the necessary steps towards achieving your technician, practitioner or chartered environmental registration.
How do we work?
We work in partnership with professional bodies such as the Arboricultural Association, Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), and many more across different sectors. This uniquely allows the Society to bring together a range of disciplines and sectors and reflect the multi-disciplinary practice of environmental professionals.
These professional bodies are licensed to award environmental registrations to their appropriately experienced and knowledgeable members. So, the first step to apply for a professional environmental registration is to become a member of one of our licensed professional bodies that suit your role.
What professional registrations are available?
We are the custodians of three professional environmental registrations:
- Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv)
- Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP)
- Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech).
Over 10,000 environmental professionals have registered as a CEnv, REnvP or REnvTech to date, with more continuing to join the register year on year.
What does it mean to be a CEnv, REnvP or REnvTech?
In short, being an environmental registrant is about having the professional knowledge, experience and commitment to apply sustainable thinking throughout your work in the progressive levels and stages of your career.

Professional registration is widely recognised as a mark to be trusted and carries a strong reputation for quality around the world. Chartered Environmentalist Pete Turner speaking about his CEnv registration has said “my CEnv registration has enabled others to consider my understanding of requirements associated with the environment and sustainability as credible, that they can expect a greater level of expertise in relation to it.”
Current CEnv, REnvP and REnvTech professionals have told us their views in the form of profiles on our website – helping to spread the word about the amazing everyday work of environmental professionals.
In each profile, we showcase their career to date and advice for others looking to pursue professional registration. Registered Environmental Technician Kerstin MacDonald speaking about applying for REnvTech said that “applying to be a REnvTech has opened my eyes to realise what I am already doing to put in place best practices. I also enjoy knowing there’s a professional body to keep myself accountable for my actions impacting the environment.”
Our profiles showcase professionals working in a wide range of disciplines, providing freely accessible insights and inspiration. Visit our website to discover more about career paths, overcoming challenges and top tips to achieving professional registration.
Would you like to stand out from the crowd and lead the way towards a sustainable future? Provide assurance of your competence to employers, clients and stakeholders by achieving CEnv, REnvP or REnvTech.
Applications are completed via membership of one of SocEnv’s Licensed Member professional bodies.
The SocEnv Team are always happy to help, so if you have any questions about professional registration, please do get in touch by email or call +44 (0)345 337 2951.
