Take the plunge…volunteer

Student Volunteering Week 2019 runs from 11th - 17th February. This is the 18th year that Student Volunteering Week is taking place. In 2018 students and staff from over 60 Higher and Further Education Institutions led over 300 events. Getting involved offers a great chance for students to develop their skills while forming key social action partnerships in local communities.

“Student Volunteer week is a fantastic way for charities, community groups and non-profit organisations to work with students and celebrate existing student volunteers. Volunteering and getting outside is a known contributor to positive wellbeing, as well as positive community engagement. We can’t wait to see what everyone has planned across the country this year”

Rosie Harvey, Student Volunteer Network Committee Chair

Student Opportunities Manager, University of Northampton Students’ Union

SVW gives a great platform for students all across the country to support the local community with, among many other projects, conservation activities with local schools, wildlife trusts and charities. Local organisations invite student volunteers in to help with ongoing maintenance, or more specific projects for example planting trees, clearing walkways, or general gardening support. All the students that get involved with these activities report enjoying supporting the local community in such a practical, active way.

History

2019 is the 18th year of Student Volunteering Week in the UK. Student volunteering and social action in the UK have a long history, from university settlements and missions in the nineteenth century to work camps for the unemployed in the interwar period to CND protesting and Student Community Action after the Second World War and throughout the later part of the 20th Century. Students are often at the forefront of promoting different social issues and interests, like the sustainability agenda and social entrepreneurship.

Student Volunteering Week is delivered through a partnership between Student Volunteering Network, Student Hubs and NUS. SVN (Student Volunteering Network) is a peer support network for anyone employed by a UK higher or further education institution to support student volunteering activity. Staff use the SVN mailbase and frequent regional meetings to share best practice and collaborate on activities throughout the year.
