The North Dorset team of the Dorset Countryside Ranger Service operates within the district of North Dorset. North Dorset has fantastic landscape and wildlife and much of it falls within two AONB’s. The Team works with a wide range of partners to manage 19 countryside sites, local nature reserves and sections of the North Dorset trailway. The sites have many habitats from mixed woodland, to chalk grassland, to river corridors. Most have much public pressure and are popular with local residents who help contribute volunteer support for site management. The North Dorset Trailway is a long distance cycle way created from a disused railway line; the further development of this route is a high priority for the North Dorset Team. You will need many practical countryside skills such as tree management, vegetation clearance, grass maintenance, hedge laying, construction and repair of countryside furniture and litter collection. You will be a ‘front line’ member of staff and will have day-to-day contact with members of the public, landowners, user groups, pressure groups and partners and will be expected to be a source of information and advice. You will supervise an Apprentice Ranger on a day-to-day basis and volunteers/students and volunteer groups as they arise. Educational work with school and youth groups is also an essential part of the Assistant Ranger duties. You will hold a relevant qualification in countryside management and have excellent practical countryside management skills. You will have relevant practical experience with a countryside management organisation in either a paid or voluntary capacity and possess a good working knowledge of the natural environment, countryside law, national, regional and local policy. You will have knowledge and experience of word processing and spreadsheets and a high awareness of health and safety issues. A full driving licence is essential and some flexibility will be required to work unsocial hours. This post is subject to CRB clearance.
