Breeding Bird Surveyor

Heritage Environmental Ltd, a leading independent ecological consultancy in Scotland, is seeking experienced ecologists to work on a large scale breeding bird survey project.

The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years experience in a consultancy background or similar specialising in birds.  You must have excellent field skills and knowledge of British breeding birds, including their songs and calls.  You should have experience of various bird survey techniques, including Moorland Bird Survey, Breeding Bird Survey and species-specific methods for raptors, forest grouse and waterfowl.

You must be self motivated and have good time management skills.  You must be computer literate with a sound knowledge of Microsoft products and some knowledge of GIS (preferred).  Full clean driving licence essential.  A vehicle and accommodation will be provided as part of the post.

You should be a graduate in relevant discipline (e.g. ecology, nature conservation, environmental management, etc.).  Membership of IEEM is preferred.

The post will be a 3-5 month contract.  Pay dependant on experience.  Starting date 1st April 2010.

You will carry out capture work of hedgehogs as part of a larger project to reverse the declines in the internationally important populations of breeding waders. The Uist Wader Project was formed in response to the decline and extensive research determined that the major factor in these declines is the introduced hedgehog.

 We are looking for a group of twelve people with previous experience of working outdoors and with animals.  You will be expected to walk up to 18km every day and carry up to 20kg in a rucksack.

Seasonal Ecological Assistants

RSK Carter Ecological Ltd is a highly successful ecological consultancy that carries out surveys and assessments for a broad range of habitats and species.

With the ecology season shortly to commence, we are seeking individuals to join the team for around six months to support the existing team on ecology projects based all over the UK. Ideally you will need to be based in Banbury, but we would consider candidates working in our other UK offices.

All candidates need to be prepared for large amounts of travelling and be happy to work away from home. Due to the nature of the work, successful candidates will need to be completely flexible on working hours, as there will be a significant amount of evening, weekend and night work. Suitable candidates ideally need a BSc in Ecology or related subject, but knowledge of ecology would override the specific need for a higher qualification. In addition you must have a UK drivers licence, be physically fit and happy to work out on site alone.

Under-Keeper/Farm/Trout fishery worker wanted

Successful candidate must be able to start immediately.

Based in S.W. Scotland

We run a small family shoot at present that has a lot of potential, we rear our own pheasants, there is also a small grouse moor that can be developed, we have a well established commercial trout fishery that has gained a reputation for quality fishing and we run a small farming enterprise with stables, pedigree cattle and sheep. As you can see a varied but interesting and exciting venture completely family run and with our total commitment and involvement. Job is probably divided 50% Gamekeeping 50% Farm/handyman.

We are looking for an enthusiastic "man Friday" physically fit with a country background willing to get involved in all aspects of the venture, not afraid of hard work and to be able to help us grow the different aspects. This is not a 9 to 5, five days a week job as you will know it needs total commitment.

The successful candidate ideally would have at least basic hands on gamekeeping and vermin control experience preferably with pheasant and partridge hold a current shotgun certificate (help will be provided in obtaining certificate if one not already held), some tractor driving experience would be advantageous, cattle and livestock experience would be desirable but not as essential as training will be given. An interest in fly fishing would be good, an outgoing personality and being able to deal with the public be totally honest and must hold a clean current driving licence.

Policy and Advice Officer – Aquaculture

You will prepare and provide aquaculture advice within Coastal and Marine Ecosystems and Use (CMEU).  Duties will include providing advice on the impacts of aquaculture on the natural heritage, responding to requests for advice on aquaculture consultations, reviewing Environmental Statements and preparing summaries of the important aspects of each consultation so as to facilitate the response process within SNH, maintenance of the aquacultural information base, contributing to the organisation and delivery of aquaculture training, development of aquaculture advisory, policy and guidance notes,  development of aquaculture microsite or web pages and contributing to wider casework as required.

It is essential that you have knowledge of the Scottish aquaculture industry and Scottish marine habitats and species coupled with a BSc in Life Sciences.  You will preferably have 1-2 years experience in a similar role.

You will have experience of electronic information management and have the ability to produce authoritative summaries of issues from a range of sources.

Area Officer (NNRs)

You will lead planning and reporting for all aspects of National Nature Reserve management in Shetland, including budget management, and carry out the same roles for our small Area Research and Survey programme. You will line manage three seasonal NNR posts and a permanent Area Officer post. An important part of this role is to co-ordinate the management of Health & Safety across the whole Area. In addition, you will be responsible for protected areas, planning advice and community liaison for South Mainland, Foula and Fair Isle. You will be a member of the Northern Isles Area Management Group and contribute broadly to the work of the Shetland team and Northern Isles Area.

You will possess a good understanding of, and commitment to, SNH’s remit and priorities.  In addition, proven knowledge and application of protected site legislation in the UK, preferably in Scotland, is essential.  You will have a knowledge and understanding of Scottish seabirds, including survey and monitoring methods.  Experience of planning and managing business activities and resources in the public sector or commercial environment will be paramount to this post, as is a commitment to promoting and interpreting the natural heritage to the public.
