CJS & RSS

Do you sometimes forget to check CJS for your Weekly update?  (You're not alone.)  Or perhaps you'd like to know when the latest CJS Monthly is online?  Or maybe you'd like the daily updates direct to your homepage?  Then why not try using RSS?

What's that then? It's a an easy way to receive updates from CJS (and lots of other people too) direct to your computer. A bit like email but without the spam and virus worries.

What is RSS? Well the initials RSS don't really mean anything but lots of people plump for 'Really Simple Syndication'.

What does it do? It allows you to decide which webpages / messages you like and the contents are delivered direct to you without having to remember to check the page for updates (very good for regularly updated pages such as jobs and news).   It takes the hassle out of staying up-to-date, by showing you the very latest information that you are interested in.  you can also RSS (where supported) to read the latest additions to your favourite blogs.

Like the sound of it? Want to start using RSS and want to know how? Read on…

UPDATE: October 2006. The newly released Internet Explorer version 7.0 supports RSS, catching up with Firefox which has done since 1.5 version. You may find that these browsers refer to RSS as News Feeds. (see below.)

To receive RSS you need a news reader. There are lots of different versions and you might already have one as part of your webmail package (eg My Yahoo has a News section which accepts RSS). We've listed the most common readers and you can always ask Google to search for "News Readers".  We use FeedDemon (now part of the NewsGator suite) – but that doesn't necessarily mean it's best it's just the one we like.

To subscribe (it's free) to RSS feeds you need the URL of the feed, sometimes this is presented as an orange RSS button, which you enter into your Reader – different readers use different methods but usually you can either drag the link to the reader or copy and paste the address.

Many CJS pages support "Auto-Discovery" by readers and browsers but wherever you see the orange icon RSS feed it means there's an RSS feed.  clikc on the icon to see the xml (that's the script the reader uses) or to drag the address onto your reader.  If you use My Yahoo!, Google or Newsgator it's even simpler; just click on the +to icon, sign into your account and that's it - there's CJS on your homepage.

Look for these buttons: Add to My Yahoo!   Subscribe in NewsGator Online   Add to Google

If you've recently upgraded your browser to Firefox 2.0 (available from 26/10/06) then all you need to do is to click on the RSS feed and Firefox does the rest. You can choose from the drop box either your installed reader (eg Feed Demon for us) or from Bloglines, My Yahoo or Google Reader. If you've upgraded to IE 7.0 (available from 16/10/06) then when you click on RSS feed you see the feed in full and have the option to 'subscribe to this feed' and store the details in a folder in IE - a bit like your favourites folder.

Who else uses RSS? Many of the major newspapers such as The Guardian and The Telegraph. The BBC has a wide range of RSS feeds on many subjects. NatureNet has a feed for the Ranger's Blog. And it's growing...
